The Inner Path
The path to spiritually conscious awareness and living reconnects us with the Divine Spirit that is our true home. This sacred journey is a journey within, one that is central to our search for wisdom, peace, and freedom.
While we can gain knowledge through reading great works or through spiritual teachers, inevitably this is a personal journey of awakening, clearing, and aligning; one that we each make ourselves. Our inner self is naturally a seeker of truth. In our outer, daily life we might be driven by needs and wants that we hope for, but our inner, core nature knows that a connection to God is the goal we prize most dearly.
The spiritual journey can feel like a rigorous path of navigating the paradox that exists between the soul and the ego, and there are points along the way that require us to discard limiting patterns of thought, and long-held misconceptions. This can be painful, but the rewards are boundless, as we begin to experience greater clarity and authentic empowerment.
For each of us, this journey marks a turning point- a recognition that we’re at a crossroads, embarking on a path of transformation. As it progresses, people often notice that their fears fade away, and they’re filled with a deep peace that seems unshakable. It is, as the Bible describes, a peace that surpasses all understanding. It is tangible, and ultimately life-changing.
As we explore this path, we experience moments of joy, and a grace-filled sense of belonging and safety. We’re able to trust that we’re being cared for, and we often receive divine guidance when we ask for it. As we step into our full potential, we discover who we really are. By reconnecting with God, we find the happiness and meaning we’ve been searching for all along.
About Taking The Inner Spiritual Path:
The inner path can be described as a release or stripping away of illusions, a waking-up to who we really are. This freedom from identification with the limited self means that we’re disengaging from our conditioning (much of which is subconscious) and our erroneous belief systems. Liberated from illusions and the burden of perceiving through limiting filters, we begin to experience an awareness that is spacious and remarkably peaceful.
One of the first realizations many people have is the awareness that although you have a body, you’re not a body– you’re an eternal soul housed temporarily in human form. As Deepak Chopra says,“You’re a spiritual being having a human experience. You’re not a human being having a spiritual experience.” Your true identity as a soul means that identification with the ego-self begins to fade. This process of understanding (and gently setting aside the old conditioning of) the ego-self lets you break through to a level of expanded consciousness that is profound and meaningful.
And the ability to simply observe without judgment the passing flow of our thoughts, emotions, and reactions, without getting needlessly caught up in them, lets us remain centered in the present moment. This is one of the many gifts of having a mindfulness practice, which is tremendously supportive for mind-body-spirit health.
Through mindfulness, meditation, and emotional healing work, we begin exploring our inner world, and start viewing our lives with greater clarity and understanding. We’re integrating the lessons we’ve learned from the past, extending forgiveness when needed, and changing old belief structures. By creating healthier, supportive patterns and beliefs, we experience greater peace, courage, faith, and freedom.
Thoughts on awakening, from the poet Rumi:
“Come, come, whoever you are. Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving. It doesn’t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair. Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times. Come, yet again, come, come.”
“The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep. You must ask for what you really want. Don’t go back to sleep. People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch. The door is round and open. Don’t go back to sleep.”
Quotable:
“Once the soul awakens, the search begins and you can never go back. From then on, you are inflamed with a special longing that will never again let you linger in the lowlands of complacency and partial fulfillment. The eternal makes you urgent.” – John O ‘Donahue
“All that you need is deep within you waiting to unfold and reveal itself. All you have to do is be still and take time to seek for what is within and you will surely find it.” – Eileen Caddy
“I do not understand the mystery of grace — only that it meets us where we are and does not leave us where it found us.” – Anne Lamott
“The kingdom of God is within you.” – Luke 17:21
“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness.” – Eckhart Tolle
